Maintained by the Newport Historical Society, the Museum of Newport History provides a lively introduction to the area's rich traditions and famous architecture. Over 10,000 objects and 100,000 photographs are preserved by the museums, with particularly strong holdings in the fields of furniture, musical instruments and architectural fragments. The recently added Silver Exhibit is particularly popular, showcasing an array of stunning, hand-crafted silver, including the Rochambeau Spoon, awarded to Lt. Gov. Jabez Bowen by the French in 1780, and the beautiful teapot given to Ida Lewis in 1881, when she rescued two drowning soldiers. The museum resides within downtown's Brick Market, just below Cardines Field.
